Not Getting Clients? Your Brand Story Might Be The Problem

When I started building my own beauty business over 15 years ago, I thought I needed all the things to stand out:

  • A pretty logo

  • A catchy tagline

  • A website that made me look legit

Turns out … none of that matters if your message is confusing.

If people can’t instantly understand what you offer and how it helps them, they’ll scroll away ~ no matter how gorgeous your ‘brand’ looks.

That’s why I want to share a powerful book I recently read: Building A Story Brand by Donald Miller. This book has changed how I teach estheticians and beauty professionals to build their businesses.

This book isn’t just for big companies. It’s for any business ~ including beauty businesses that want to stand out in a crowded market and connect with clients on a deeper level.

Here’s the core of what I learned:

Your beauty business isn’t about your story.
It’s about your client’s story ~ and you are not the hero.

You’re the guide ~ the steady, supportive, knowledgeable mentor who helps them get what they want.

Most Beauty Brands Get This Wrong

They lead with their story:

“I’ve been in the industry for 10 years…”
“I’m passionate about skincare…”
“I use the best products…”

It’s not that those things aren’t important ~ they just don’t answer what every potential client is asking:

“How does this help me look and feel better?”

We throw around the word “branding” like it means fonts, colors, or catchy taglines.

But real branding is about message clarity.

When your dream client lands on your Instagram or website, they need to know immediately:

  1. What do you offer?

  2. How will what you offer make their life better or solve their problem?

  3. What do they need to do to get started?

If your brand story isn’t centered around your client’s transformation, you’re going to lose them.

That’s where the7-Part Story Brand Framework by Don Miller comes in ~ It's simple, clear, and powerful. It helps you develop your story and clarify your message when building your brand. Let me show you how it can be used in your beauty business using the following 7 simple steps.

1. Choose A Character ‘Hero’ In Your Story

Your CLIENT is the hero ~ not your business. They are dreaming of clear skin, full lashes, brows that frame their face just right. They want to feel confident and seen.

2. They Come To You With a Problem - Define the problem

Your client is dealing with acne, aging, unwanted hair, or lack of confidence, and underneath that problem are deeper feelings ~ like embarrassment or frustration. They need someone who understands their problem ~ and gets them.

3. They Meet A Guide (That’s You 💛)

You’re not here to impress them ~ you’re here to serve them.
With empathy, knowledge, and a clear path forward you become the trusted guide with a solution for them.

4. You, As Their Guide Gives Them A Plan

You make the next step easy for them. You create a plan for them. The more simple and clear the plan, the more likely they’ll follow through with the plan.

5. You Call Them To Act On The Plan

You invite them to work with you. You tell them what to do next:

  • Book their first facial

  • Stay out of the sun before their first laser treatment

  • Purchase a specific product

Their next steps should be clear. Without a clear call to action they will hesitate and may not do anything. They may not come back.

6. You Help Them Avoid Negative Results

They will avoid guessing about what they need and you will show them what they will avoid by working with you:

  • Continuing to waste money on products that don’t work

  • Feeling self-conscious in their skin

  • Booking with another provider who doesn’t understand their goals

7. You, As Their Guide Show Them Their Desired Outcome. You paint the picture of what’s possible:

  • Clear, glowing skin

  • A simple morning routine they love

  • Confidence in photos, events, and every day

This is where your transformation story comes alive, where you show your clients why they need to choose you.
